What’s New at So Chic?!

What’s new…hmmm that’s a loaded question. It’s probably easier to tell you what’s NOT new! When I first logged onto my blog this morning I realized I needed to do a little housekeeping, it was a bit dusty! I have been doing a LOT of brainstorming over the last 5 months about my business, where I’d like it to go, where my true passion lies…the list could go on. I LOVE being creative, absolutely love it in all it’s forms. If you were to come over and see my studio you’d see what I mean. Over the last 5 months I have dusted off (apparently doing a lot of that!) my sewing machine and my embroidery machine. I have more cardstock, stamp sets, embossing powder, embellishments, ribbon and fabric than a lot of people. I’ve also discovered the fun of applique (after a few tries) and I’m working on a certificate in graphic design which I’m hoping to have complete by the end of this year. There isn’t just one creative outlet that I enjoy, I enjoy many, I feel like I’m a power strip I have so many outlets!

Ok, so where am I going with this? Since I started this business I’ve always offered some custom designs, although I’ve discovered a lot of people that didn’t know this, but I’ve decided to expand on those designs quite a bit. For awhile now I’ve wanted to get more products in my etsy store and it’s finally happening. Last night I listed several ring pillows and bridal bags and I’ll be adding other items in the coming weeks. Many of the items I posted (the red prints and the cream/black damask) were created with fabric that I purchased from Venezie Fabrics. I’m a visual person, I like to see things in person and now that Karen opened up a storefront close by I stop in often to check out what fabrics she has (which is a lot by the way!). And since I’m sewing quite a bit my new super cute pear shaped pin cushion is quite handy!
I have a lot of ideas and projects in the works and my ultimate goal is to create a variety of items for all types of events. Here are a few things on that list (some of which I’ve always offered): Banners & signs, labels & tags for favors, chair backs, candy buffets etc, monograms & logos, invitations & other stationery items, runners, ring pillows & bridal bags. All of the craft supplies I mentioned above? Those will all be put to good use!
If you have something you’d like for your next event, give me a shout! I’d love to create something just for you. So stay tuned, there’s lots of good things coming to So Chic!

Here are pictures of a few of the pillows I listed on etsy last night, visit my store to see all of them.

Graduation Party Success!

My niece Meredith graduated from high school a couple weeks ago and I had a blast planning her graduation party. Plotting it all out, going through tons of pictures and pulling it all together I felt many emotions, shed some tears and laughed so hard it hurt. Mere was born on my 14th birthday and she’s always been very special to me. She’s brilliant, beautiful and so very funny. As I watched her walk across the stage to get her diploma I was so very proud of her.

I really wanted this party to be special for her. The school colors, gerbera daisies (one of her favorites) and photos were weaved throughout the party. Everyone had a fabulous time dancing and singing karaoke. Here are some pictures from the party, if you’d like to see the rest you can see them on our Facebook Page.

Creative Overload

Anyone creative will probably know exactly what I mean by creative overload which is what I’m having today. The annual company cookout for one of my dad’s companies is in a couple weeks and while I’ve been playing with a few ideas here and there, today I have been online pricing out things and deciding where to buy stuff. I have had a creative brainstorm for the past 5 hours and now have it all plotted out. The wheels started turning in my head and they just kept on going. I’m so excited to do this but really need to get moving because I have a lot to do in the next couple weeks!

We’re doing a patriotic theme this year which my mom loves, she’s very into patriotic themes, it’s even how she has her pool area decorated. Over the past few years I’ve been able to get her to branch out onto other themes and we had a lot of fun doing it. A couple years ago we did a luau and went all out with the tropical decor. Our employees even got into it with their attire, donning Hawaiian shirts, sandals and straw hats. Last year was the 40th anniversary of dad’s other company and we used that as our theme, concentrating on the company colors and elements of the business. I had a lot of projects for it including a moss dump truck and a tractor and loader made out of flowers, among other things. If you’re interested in seeing last years pictures, click here.

In addition to it being a patriotic theme we’re also incorporating “support the troops” into it. I mentioned this to my mom and my specific reason behind it and she was all for it, which I knew she would be. One of our employees has been in North Carolina for training since May and will be deployed to Iraq in August. I give him and all of our other troops a lot of credit for doing what they do. They risk their lives every day for our country, that’s both noble and brave. I wanted to honor him by doing this so in a way it will feel as if he’s with us, I know we’ll all be thinking of him. Hopefully his deployment will go by as quickly as possible and he’ll be coming home to his family and friends. Until then, he’ll be in our thoughts. God bless him and the rest of our troops.

An Inviting Love Story

I love when couples really break away from the norm and do something completely different than everyone else. When I came across this totally fun and unique invitation on the Love, Unique blog I just had to share it, it was too cool not to. I’ve actually seen it on a couple blogs but there’s was the first that I saw it. What a great way to share your story with your guests. So I’ll ask the same thing that Love, Unique did…would you consider using something this unique?

Be sure to also check out their website, their work is absolutely stunning!

Be Inspired!

Planning your wedding can be so exciting! You see something that catches your eye in a magazine or online so you clip it and you save it in the folder you’ve dedicated to your wedding planning. But sometimes brides have all these ideas in a folder or stuck in their head and they have a hard time pulling all of them together. Maybe you’re at the opposite end of the spectrum and simply don’t have the slightest idea where to start. Well regardless of which bride you are, I have some great news for you! Whether you’ve got it all together or you’re stressing on what color to choose, you’ll get some amazing inspiration from the inspiration boards on Magnet Street Weddings. These boards are absolutely marvelous! Browse through them and see what catches your eye, perhaps you’ll build off the ideas you already had or you’ll gain a fresh perspective to create your own inspiration board. Want to share it once you’re done? Perfect! I’d love to see it, as I’m sure other brides would too. Upload it to the Internet and post the link in the comments section of this post, or if you want some input but don’t want to share it with the world, email it to me at info{at}sochicevents.com. Best of luck!

Custom Made Card Boxes

Awhile back I came across custom made card boxes on Etsy. I truly love Etsy because of all the great finds on there, if you haven’t checked it out yet I highly recommend it. These custom made card boxes I found were gorgeous and I wanted to get one to coordinate with my table for the expo but I didn’t have enough time to do so, so instead I figured I’d make one myself. I’m pretty crafty, how hard could it be? It came out pretty decent, it was cute, for my first shot at it I was pleased. However I don’t think I’d ever do another one again. I now understand why they’re priced how they are because a lot of time and detail go into them. I’d much rather refer clients to these fine people.
If you want to check out the card boxes For the Modern Bride on Etsy, click here to go to their Etsy site and here for their website. I know, I know mine is nothing compared to the ones on their site, those are gorgeous!

Here is the one I did for the expo although I forgot to bring it. It matched perfectly too.

Expo Centerpiece

I wanted to post a picture of the centerpiece I used for the expo, as it was quite a hit. It wasn’t lit like this then because there was too much light in the room for it to be visible. I think it looks cool lit up so I wanted to share :) This is just a picture I had taken of it on my dining room table when I was playing around so it’s not the best picture, it would’ve looked better if I could’ve got it lit up with all the linens.

Inspiration Boards

Where do you find your inspiration? Inspiration is all over the place and can be found in the smallest, simplest things or rather large things as well. It’s all in what inspires you personally. I truly love color and working with it so inspiration boards are something I’m really beginning to enjoy. Aside from color, texture is equally important as it can change something completely. The best part about these boards is I’m getting inspiration from things non wedding related and I think that’s important. It’s always great to think outside the box so I’m looking everywhere and anywhere for inspiration and I’m finding it in lots of places. If I come across something online that catches my eye and inspires me I save it and I just keep saving and then each week I plan on doing a new board. It’s a great way to keep my creative mind in check.

On a different note, (speaking of my mind), I didn’t post a pic of my camera accessories with yesterday’s post! I totally forgot, so here’s my camera accessories picture.

My First Piece of "So Chic" Clothing

I’ve wanted to try embroidering my business name onto something other than scrap fabric for awhile now but with the holidays and being busy in general I just haven’t had time. And well, I admit I was also a little frightened by it. So last night I finally did it! I designed it on the computer and then away to the machine I went! It wasn’t the best quality tank top but I didn’t want to do it on something expensive the first time around, just in case! It came out really nice though so now I want to embroider all sorts of things, maybe a sweatshirt, a shirt, a hoodie…who knows!

Party was a Success!

My parents 40th anniversary party was this past Saturday and it went fabulously! Everything was how I hoped it would be. It even snowed which worked into my plan perfectly and that just made me so happy.

J & L Catering did a great job. The food was delicious, the presentation was beautiful and they were very professional. My baked cod was delightful and everyone with the prime rib was equally happy. Even the kids’ meals were fabulous, I couldn’t help but nibble on what my son didn’t finish. I will definitely use them again, and I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a caterer.

The room turned out so gorgeous. Everyone just loved the table and the fireplace and all the little details I put into it. Here’s one picture from that night, I put the rest on my website already. You can find them under the Theme Party gallery, at the beginning.

My parents had such a great time at their party and ultimately that was what I wanted. They loved all the little touches, the collage of pictures that was made, poinsettias which mom and her bridesmaids carried, but most of all they loved the company. Happy 40th Anniversary Mom & Dad! You’re an inspiration and I love you.
